If your child has a birthday in winter, you are lucky. You know you need either an indoor event, or something that works whatever the weather.

Summer birthdays, in this country at least, present a decision. Hope for good weather and plan on outdoors, or stick with the indoor options. In practice, even if the weather forecast’s good, it’s worth having a backup plan for what to do if you do need to move indoors/under shelter – having a few ‘immediate’ games such as pass-the-parcel prepared will allow you to keep the guests occupied for a short time while you re-arrange other things.

The real thing is to have been able to sit down beforehand and think “What do we do if this happens?” – If you’ve had a chance to do that, then if something does happen, you’ve got a plan you can put into action.
